Just like that, the area boys basketball season is over.
There were some outstanding regular season records but they didn’t result in any postseason hardware.
The calendar didn’t even turn to March and all of the teams were gone.
Manteno and Crete-Monee were the last two teams still standing and were beaten in the regional finals on Feb. 28.
Manteno, the second seed in the Class 2A Coal City Regional, was stopped by fifth-seeded Southland College Prep 73-66 to wrap up the season at 21-12.
The Panthers did receive good news when Ray Lee and Andrew Norred made the all-Illinoi Central Eight conference team.
The season marked the first time in school history that the boys hoops team had back-to-back 20-win seasons.
Crete-Monee’s boys finished 19-13, which ties for the most Warrior wins in a season since 2010-11. They dropped a 56-54 heartbreaker to Hillcrest in the Class 3A Hillcrest Regional title.
The Warriors recently found out that Jayden Preston, Jaylen Blakes and Zyheir Gardner were all-Southland Athletic Conference selections.
Before the regional finals, Beecher (18-13), Peotone (16-14) and Illinois Lutheran (5-18) had their seasons halted.
Goranson still sharp
After a successful cross-country season, Manteno freshman Klarke Goranson is ready to made a name for herself in track as well.
Goranson easily won the 1600-meter event with at the Jess Gathing Kays indoor invitational in Kankakee with a time of 4 minutes, 56.76 seconds. Herscher’s Kelly O’Connor was second with a 5:32.92.
In the fall, Goranson finished sixth in the state in Class 1A in cross country.
Boley an MVP
Former Beecher track standout Maddie Boley earned MVP honors at the Midwest Conference Indoor Championships on March 1.
Boley, a senior at Monmouth, won the shot put event with a 13.70 meter throw and in the weight throw, she fired off an 18.26.
She keeps together a strong Monmouth tradition as the Fighting Scots won both of those events 17 times at the conference meet.
Four-time champ
Crete-Monee track standout Tamryn Farmer won all four events that she entered in at the Steelman Shuffle indoor meet March 1 hosted by Joliet Central.
She won the 55 meter dash (:07.6), the 200 (:27.54) and long jump and teamed with Liyannah Anthony, Myricle Hudson, and Lauren Glover to claim the 800 relay with a 1:54.23.
