Dr. John Francis Moran, M.D., a distinguished cardiologist and esteemed professor, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 13, 2025, in Burr Ridge, Illinois, at the age of 86.
Born on Sept. 5, 1938, in Chicago, he was the beloved son of John and Mary Moran and the older brother of Patrick (Rosemary) and Thomas (Diane).
In 1965, Dr. Moran married Cabrina (née Greco) Moran, with whom he shared 60 years of love and partnership. Together, they raised three accomplished children: Dr. Stephanie Moran (Rick Sargis), Dr. Christopher Moran (Laura Stack Moran), and Dr. Meghan Moran (Michael Campea). He was a devoted grandfather to Claire Moran, Delilah Campea, and Kaia Campea. He found great joy in time spent with his granddaughters and had a passion for movies—especially westerns—fiction writing, and books on tape.
A proud alumnus of St. Rita High School in Chicago, Dr. Moran earned a full scholarship to Loyola University Chicago, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in biology. He pursued his doctorate in medicine at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, graduating in 1964. Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois Hospital Chicago and later specialized in cardiology through a fellowship at the University of Chicago. He also became a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). From 1969 to 1971, he served as a Major in the United States Air Force, working as a cardiologist at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base.
Dr. Moran’s professional career was defined by his dedication to patient care, research, and education. He served as Chief of Cardiology at Loyola University Medical Center and was a respected professor of medicine. Throughout his career, he cared for thousands of patients, published numerous journal articles, and mentored countless medical students and resident physicians. His contributions to the field of cardiology earned him multiple recognitions as a “Top Doctor” in Chicago Magazine.
A wake was held on Feb. 19 at Adolf Funeral Home in Willowbrook, Illinois, followed by a funeral Mass at St. John of the Cross in Western Springs.
Services were entrusted to Szykowny Funeral Home, Jonathan Siedlecki, owner-director.
Dr. Moran’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and excellence will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
