Former House Speaker Madigan convicted of bribery and wire fraud

Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Chicago Democrat and the longest-serving legislative leader in U.S. history, was convicted of bribery and wire fraud in a high-profile corruption trial, according to published reports.

A jury found Madigan guilty on 10 counts, acquitted him on seven, and deadlocked on six. Prosecutors presented recordings and testimony alleging Madigan used his influence to benefit allies and his law firm. Madigan, who denied wrongdoing, left court without comment, the Associated Press reported.
