An agreement has been reached to extend the years of service by the North Palos Fire Protection District for the Village of Worth.
An ordinance approving the second amendment to the intergovernmental agreement was reached at the Worth Village Board meeting on Feb. 4.
The North Palos Fire Protection District Station 3, 7112 W. 111th St., began serving Worth officially on Jan. 1, 2009. The village and North Palos entered into an agreement authorizing the district to provide fire and emergency services for residents and businesses of the community.
The first amendment agreement extension was reached on Sept. 5, 2017, and established a term that was scheduled to end on Dec. 31, 2028.
However, the North Palos Fire Protection District officials reached out to Mayor Mary Werner and the board requesting an extension beyond that term. The mayor and the board agreed and extended the term to Dec. 31, 2038.
“It just made sense to extend the service,” Werner said. ‘We have a very good relationship with the district.”
Trustee Brad Urban, who is the head of the public works committee, applauded the department for their efforts in repairing water main breaks.
“Our public works crew has been phenomenal,” Urban said. “One night we had water main breaks most of the evening and they continued to repair them right away. This was the same night as the Chicago Ridge apartment fire so we had to share water to put out that blaze. But they still got the work done.”
Trustee Pete Kats, who serves as the chair of the public safety committee, mentioned that the village is accepting applications for new police officers.
Kats added that the annual Worth FOP Polar Plunge will take place Saturday, March 15, in the parking lot of Marrs-Meyer American Legion Post, 11001 S. Depot St. A pool will be put up in the lot and members of the police department, local leaders, and residents of all ages will participate.
“And I just want to remind members of the board and residents that they can join in the plunge,” Werner said.
Participants can sign up as individuals or as part of a team by contacting the village. Werner said that the police department raised $26,000 for Special Olympics through the Polar Plunge, the Cop on Top and other activities a year ago.
An ordinance amending portions of garbage container service was given final approval during the meeting. All garbage, refuse and ashes for collection will be placed in metal containers equipped with a tight-fitting cover and equipped with handles that can be lifted and carried by one person.
No containers will exceed 30 gallons. The owner of every apartment building, hotel, rooming house or multiple-family dwelling needs to provide containers of various sizes. Two to six units will have collection service every seven days, and seven to 12 units twice every seven days, according to the ordinance.
Another ordinance was amended and approved regarding firearm dealers regulations. The previous ordinance dated back to the 1960s, according to Village Attorney Greg Jones.
The board gave tentative approval for AZ Tires, 6623 W. 111th St., Unit B. Owner Ahmed Alzoubi said he will operate a used tire shop. Urban asked if old or damaged tires would be removed from the shop? Alzoubi said damaged tires would be removed on a weekly basis.
Alzoubi also said that all tires will be stored inside the building and not outside.
A license was also given tentative approval for Island Appliance LLC, 11304 S. Harlem Ave. Owner Tariq Mustafa said he will be selling new and used appliances.
Trustee Laura Packwood, who serves as chair of the golf committee, said renovations of the enclosed patio at the clubhouse has taken place. She mentioned that the restaurant will feature repairs to the kitchen.
New and updated landscaping will be featured in front of the clubhouse, which will include new plants. Packwood said that Orion, which manages the Water’s Edge Golf Course, clubhouse and driving range, has committed to making improvements.
“They are excited about the upcoming season,” Packwood said.
