When the NWSL season started, there was a gap in the schedule — created to accommodate international play — that left the Chicago Red Stars without a league game for most of July.
But some extra games have been added, as the NWSL and Liga MX are participating in a Summer Cup.
“I think it’s good for football, for the game that our neighbors in Mexico — we’ve dealt with Canada a lot — and it’s time we have good competition with Mexico,” Red Stars coach Lorne Donaldson said. “I think it’s great for the women’s game.”
The Red Stars are in the same pool with NWSL teams Gotham and Washington, along with Chivas de Guadalajara.
Two pool-play games will be held at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. Gotham comes to town at 5 p.m. on July 20 while Chivas de Guadalajara stops by at 7 p.m. on July 26.
The Red Stars will visit Washington on July 31.
The semifinals of the tournament will be Aug. 4 and the championship match will be played in late October.
